Elsa Schmid (1897, Stuttgart, Germany – 1970 Port Chester, NY) created works that spanned sculpture, painting, stained glass, and mosaic. Her career was prolific, exhibiting in group shows at the Museum of Modern Art, NY alongside the likes of Matisse and Picasso. Born in Stuttgart, Germany, Schmid moved to New York, where she would meet her future husband JB Neumann, who began as a print publisher and art dealer in Germany before becoming a prominent gallery director in New York. Schmid’s works are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, NY; Baltimore Museum of Art, MD; and Fogg Museum, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA.
